Season 13 of
the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on 29 March 2020 &
the last league game of the IPL 2020 is scheduled on 17 May 2020.
IPL 2020 Full Schedule:
The full schedule of the league phase of the 13th edition of Indian
Premier League (IPL) is out with all eight teams playing seven home and 7
away matches.
An additional week has been included at the league stage. So, instead
of the 44-day league stage seen in the last outing, the upcoming season
will now have a 50-day league session. This will make the IPL 2020 the
longest in the tournament history.
The organisers have scrapped ‘double-header’ Saturdays, but Sundays will feature two matches this season.
Earlier, the IPL governing council had decided against changing
timings of the night games from 8 pm to 7.30 pm despite pressure from a
few stakeholders.
In a noble gesture, the BCCI will have an All Stars Game between all
top international players before the start of IPL for a charitable
cause.
The ICC Awards are a set of sports awards for cricket.
The awards recognize and honor the best international cricket players of the previous 12 months.
Here is the complete list of ICC award 2019 winners:
Umpire of the year: Richard Illingworth (England) Associate Cricketer of the Year: Kyle Coetzer (Scotland) T20I Performance of the Year: Deepak Chahar’s 6/7 against Bangladesh ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer: Marnus Labuschagne (Australia) Spirit of Cricket Award: Virat Kohli (India) ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year: Rohit Sharma (India) ICC Test Cricketer of the Year: Pat Cummins (Australia) ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year (Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy): Ben Stokes (England)
With standout numbers over the decade – 23 hundreds apiece and 67
fifties combined – the two left-handers accounted for nearly 16000 Test
runs and stood above other worthy competitors for these two slots.
Middle Order – Kumar Sangakkara, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli
The three batsmen with outstanding records make the final cut. Until
his retirement in 2015, Sangakkara averaged 60.34, including a triple
hundred, Steve Smith’s Bradmanesque turn saw him average even more than
Sangakkara at 62.84 while Virat Kohli’s 27 hundreds remained
unparalleled over the decade.
Wicket-keeper: AB de Villiers
His record as a batsman in the 23 games that he donned gloves is
simply stunning. Hitting 7 hundreds & an average of 59.5, the
numbers are simply too hard to ignore.
Spinners: R Ashwin and Rangana Herath
57 five-wicket hauls & sixteen 10-wicket hauls between these two
in the 2010s. They led their respective teams’ spin attack splendidly,
particularly in the subcontinent making them near-automatic choices.
Pacers: Dale Steyn, James Anderson and Morne Morkel
Dale Steyn, with 15 five-wicket hauls and a strike-rate of 43.93,
and James Anderson who has more wickets (429) than anyone else are a cut
above the rest. Morne Morkel, an underrated member of the fast bowling
community, has a balanced home and away record while also complements
the other two with his brand of fast bowling.
The year 2019 saw a lot of action in the field of cricket, from
ball-tampering incidents to the controversial ‘Mankading’ in the Indian
Premier League (IPL) 2019, several cricket on-field controversies made headlines during the year 2019.
Here is a lists of five controversies in world cricket that drew a lot of attention during 2019:
1. ICC World Cup 2019 final
What happened on the last ball (A
throw to the stumps deflected off the bat of a diving Ben Stokes as he
tried to complete a second run and raced to the boundary, with Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena awarding six)
of the ICC World Cup 2019 final match left even the pundits asking for
rules of the game to be changed. Well, the real controversy came after
the match. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena admitted to have made an error
in awarding four overthrow runs to England. Had Dharmasena not made
that mistake, there would perhaps been no tie, no super over, and no
boundary countback — It would have been New Zealand, not England,
celebrating their maiden Word Cup title.
Hardik Pandya & KL Rahul courted an unnecessary controversy with their remarks on the TV show Koffee with Karan. While Rahul chose his words carefully, Pandya was seen bragging unabashedly about his relationships with multiple women. ‘Sexist, misogynistic and racist‘,
this was the reaction from the world as Hardik ‘got carried away’ with
the format of the show. Pandya later took to social media to apologise for his comments and said that he “got a bit carried away” on the show.
4. Ball tampering
There were claims that Australia’s Adam Zampa tampered with the ball during the second match of the ICC cricket World Cup 2019 against India. In videos
that later went viral on social media, Zampa was seen putting his hand
in his left pocket before shinning the ball. His team, however,
clarified that Zampa used a hand warmer, as he had often done before
during the Australia’s domestic Big Bash League. There was no official
investigation against Zampa and umpires did not raise any concerns.
5. Prithvi Shaw’s suspension for ‘Doping’
Young India cricket team opening batsman Prithvi Shaw was handed a backdated suspension
of eight months for a doping violation in the 2018-19 domestic season.
The right-handed batsman was said to have inadvertently ingested a
prohibited substance, found commonly in cough syrups. Shaw provided a
urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing programme during
the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on February 22 in Indore. He served a
ban and made a comeback only in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy against
Assam on November 15.
