India withdraws 'Most Favoured Nation' status given to Pakistan

Union Minister Arun Jaitley said that the government has decided to withdraw the "Most Favoured Nation" status given to Pakistan, in the wake of the worst-ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir a day ago when a CRPF convoy in Pulwama was rammed into by an explosive-packed SUV that has left 45 troopers dead.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the suicide attack on Thursday that proved to be the most devatating since militancy erupted in 1989.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said: "The most favoured nation status which has been granted to Pakistan stands withdrawn with immediate effect."

What is 'Most Favoured Nation' status?
  • Under the WTO agreements, countries cannot normally discriminate between their trading partners. Grant someone a special favour (such as a lower customs duty rate for one of their products) and you have to do the same for all other WTO members.
  • This principle is known as most-favoured-nation (MFN) treatment. It is so important that it is the first article of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which governs trade in goods. MFN is also a priority in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) (Article 2) and the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) (Article 4), although in each agreement the principle is handled slightly differently. Together, those three agreements cover all three main areas of trade handled by the WTO.

When did India grant MFN status to Pakistan?
  • India granted MFN status to Pakistan in 1996, a year after the formation of WTO. After the Uri attack in 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the MFN treatment accorded to Pakistan. Pakistan still hasn't granted India with MFN status.

Virushka Marriage : Anushka Sharma And Virat Kohli are Married - See Wedding Pics & Videos

Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma got hitched in Italy earlier today. Last week, the Internet exploded with rumours that actress Anushka Sharma and cricketer Virat Kohli had a hush-hush wedding in Italy planned.

The couple got married Monday in a luxury resort in Tuscany, Italy.

The Will-they and Won't-they rumour mill stopped churning on Monday evening after the Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma tweeted from Tuscany, Italy that they were finally hitched.

Anushka Sharma's makeup was light and minimal which added an elegant touch to the entire look. The ethereal couple tied the knot at a picturesque location and from what we could see from the latest pictures of the wedding, the two looked celestial in Sabyasachi ensembles. The actress was seen in an exquisite tailor-made creation from the designer's boutique, a pale pink lehenga with 'Renaissance embroidery' in vintage English colours embellished with silver-gold metal thread, pearls and beads.

While the bridal jewellery was handcrafted with syndicate uncut diamonds, pale pink spinel and baroque Japanese cultured pearls by the Sabyasachi Heritage Jewellery collection.
Whereas, captain of the Indian Cricket Team Virat wore an ivory raw silk sherwani, hand-embroidered in a vintage Benarasi pattern and signature House buttons with an old Rose silk Kota safa with accessories by Sabyasachi.

The wedding was performed as per Hindu rituals. Anushka walked down the aisle with Virat yesterday in Italy, in a private ceremony.

The wedding took place at a countryside resort named Borgo Finocchieto, one of the most expensive holiday properties in the world. The property is located in a small village called Bibbiano - having a population of less than 100 people. It is in the Tuscany region of Italy.

The couple will be hosting a reception in New Delhi for their relatives on December 21 which will be followed by a reception for couple's Bollywood friends and cricketers in Mumbai on December 26.

At least 22 people have been killed and 30 injured in a Elphinstone station stampede on foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations in Mumbai

The injured have been admitted to KEM Hospital.

The Elphinstone station shares one of its two footbridges with Parel station which is on the Central line. Being two of the major railway stations with many of the office complexes right around the corner, the stations are always overcrowded during pick office hours. Officials confirm that no part of the bridge has collapsed.

The tragedy took place amid rain in the city around 10.40 am when the foot overbridge was heavily crowded, a police official said. "It seems all started when someone slipped because of the wet floor" Railway PRO Anil Saxena said.

Police suspect a short-circuit with a loud sound near the FOB led to panic and people started running, resulting in the stampede.
