India withdraws 'Most Favoured Nation' status given to Pakistan

India has withdrawn the 'Most Favoured Nation' status granted to Pakistan in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack in which more than 40 CRPF jawans were martyred.

India withdraws 'Most Favoured Nation' status given to Pakistan

Union Minister Arun Jaitley said that the government has decided to withdraw the "Most Favoured Nation" status given to Pakistan, in the wake of the worst-ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir a day ago when a CRPF convoy in Pulwama was rammed into by an explosive-packed SUV that has left 45 troopers dead.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the suicide attack on Thursday that proved to be the most devatating since militancy erupted in 1989.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said: "The most favoured nation status which has been granted to Pakistan stands withdrawn with immediate effect."

What is 'Most Favoured Nation' status?
  • Under the WTO agreements, countries cannot normally discriminate between their trading partners. Grant someone a special favour (such as a lower customs duty rate for one of their products) and you have to do the same for all other WTO members.
  • This principle is known as most-favoured-nation (MFN) treatment. It is so important that it is the first article of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which governs trade in goods. MFN is also a priority in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) (Article 2) and the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) (Article 4), although in each agreement the principle is handled slightly differently. Together, those three agreements cover all three main areas of trade handled by the WTO.

When did India grant MFN status to Pakistan?
  • India granted MFN status to Pakistan in 1996, a year after the formation of WTO. After the Uri attack in 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the MFN treatment accorded to Pakistan. Pakistan still hasn't granted India with MFN status.

Manikarnika Movie Review

Manikarnika Movie Review

Kangana shines in a superfluous narrative

  • Film: "Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi"
  • Director: Kangana Ranaut and Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi
  • Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Ankita Lokhande, Atul Kulkarni, Danny Denzonpa, Suresh Oberoi, Jishu Sengupta, Vikram Kochhar, Prajakta Mali, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, Kulbushan Kharbanda

Here is an opportunity for those who have not heard of the legendary Rani Laxmibai, the warrior queen of Jhansi, who gallantly battled against the British with her infant son tied to her back during the Indian revolution.

With a tale spanning from 1828 to 1858, the film, "Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi" gives you a fair picture about her life and times.

On the acting front, every actor appears sincere, but none stand out for their performance beside Actress Kangana Ranaut who has helmed this film along with Krish Jagarlamudi, plays the eponymous role with all sincerity. Her craft-fuelled intoxication is both naive and endearing. She breathes life into the feisty Manikarnika, but, just like the eye lashes she flaunts in the film.

Visually the film is a treat.

The war scenes with astutely choreographed action sequences are imposing. Mounted on a magnificent scale of an epic with excellent production values, the elaborate production designs of the sets along with the costumes are impressive.

The VFX and the live action sequences are seamlessly layered in the film.

Overall, this film is awe inspiring due to its grandeur but fails to touch the emotional chord in your heart.

My Rating: 3/5

'Thackeray': Aesthetically presented and Convincing

  • Film: "Thackeray"
  • Director: Abhijit Panse
  • Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao, Sudhir Mishra, Abdul Quadir Amin, Radha Sagar, Laxman Singh Rajput

The movie gives us an insight into the life of the late Bal Keshav "Balasahed" Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena and his meteoric rise in Maharashtra's political space.

The film portrays Balasaheb as a caring and considerate family man and upturns many myths while portraying him as the fiery, revolutionary leader, who "has the power to control Bombay" in the times of questionable democracy.

Most of the lines spoken are direct lifts from Balashaheb's speeches and writings, clearly displaying his presence of mind and how good an orator he was.

The plot is replete with the milestones that occurred during his lifetime, and each event is backed by facts in a cause and effect style, thus making the tale convincing.

Though Nawazuddin Siddiqui embodies Balashaheb but he doesn't manage to not transcend his source material or Balashaheb's blazing spirit. He is more understated and demure in his disposition.

Amrita Rao is effortlessly convincing as Balasaheb's wife Meenatai. The rest of the supporting cast has a strong similarity to the characters they portray.

While each moment in the film is simple and realistic and the fluidity of the narrative taut, the end is rather abrupt. But, the promise of a sequel is what keeps the spirits high while leaving the auditorium.

Overall, this film is notches better than any of the previous movies offering a glimpse into Balasaheb's life.

I’ll rate the Movie: 3.5/5

PM Narendra Modi releases Rs 100 rupee coin in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

On the eve of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 94th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a 100 rupee coin in the memory of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to honour the late leader, who passed away in August.

"Atal Ji wanted democracy to be supreme. He built the Jana Sangh. But, when the time came to rescue our democracy he and others went to Janata Party. Likewise, when the choice was between remaining in power or comprising on ideology, he left Janata Party and formed the BJP," the PM Narendra Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi said Vajpayee as a speaker was unparalleled. "When he spoke, the nation spoke... when he spoke the nation listened," he said.

The mind is not ready to believe that Vajpayee is no longer alive. Though he was away from public glare for nearly a decade due to ill health, the way people gave him a farewell on his demise showed the mark he had created in people's minds, PM said.
Commemorative coins are usually issued to celebrate some special occasion or to mark a special event. They also have been issued as a mark of respect towards some distinguished individuals or monument.

The Rs 100 coin, Modi said, is a small effort to show our respect to the former Prime Minister, "whose life is a message for all of us".

Woman loses Rs 1 lakh to ‘Google Search Fraud’: Here's how to stay Safe

Woman loses Rs 1 lakh to ‘Google Search Fraud’

Woman from Seemapuri region of East Delhi did not knew that a simple Google Search mistake could lead to a fraud that would cost her Rs 1 lakh. This is because scamsters have now found a new way to find potential victims through Google search. Interestingly, this is not a hack or vulnerability from Google's end but a simple misuse of a service that Google made to help internet users.
google search fraud.jpg

Here is everything you need to know about these kinds of fraud - Google Search Fraud:

  • The woman, who works with a private firm, was having problems with her e-wallet account and started searching for the customer care number. She searched for the customer care phone number on Google to report about a wrong transaction in her e-wallet account. The woman called a phone number she found on a website after searching on Google assuming its the official customer care phone number. It turns out that the customer care phone number was of a fraudster who posed as a customer care representative of the e-wallet company. Assuming that it is the official customer care phone number, the woman provided her card details to get a refund from the e-wallet company. Before realising anything fishy, the woman’s bank account got robbed of Rs 1 lakh.

This same fraud recently happened for EPFO Provident Fund. People called a wrong number and got scammed. In this scam, people calls on the number appearing on Google, thinking it to be that of a government official.

What is Google Search Fraud?

  • Scamsters change the contact details with their phone number to trap people on Google Search. Believing that Google shows the correct contact number of banks, people call the scamster instead after searching on Google. The scamster in disguise of a bank employee asks for personal details from the caller to verify the call. Sometimes, scamster redirect to fake IVRs to make the call appear real. To get services on mobile, gullible users share card details, ATM PIN, and other details.

The next time don’t rely on just Google to search for contact details, visit official websites for phone numbers/contact details: Be Safe

10 years of 26/11: A timeline of the Mumbai Terror Attack

Ten years ago on this day, India's financial capital Mumbai faced the worst terror attack after 10 heavily armed terrorists sailed into the city.
26-11-attack.jpg

Twenty-Six Eleven, as these attacks are often referred to as, witnessed 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists coming to Mumbai via sea route from Pakistan and carrying out a series of coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across the city.

The terrorists targeted 4 major landmarks of Mumbai:
  • First Attack Site: At the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station.
  • Second Attack Site: At Nariman House business and residential complex.
  • Third Attack Site: At the Leopold Cafe followed by Taj Mahal Hotel and Tower.
  • Fourth Attack Site: At Oberoi-Trident hotel
The ghastly attacks lasted for three days of mayhem and bloodbath, killing 166 people and injuring over 300.

In these gruesome attacks, 9 terrorists were killed and the lone survivor, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was caught and was sentenced to death at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune in 2012.

The Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) was believed to have plotted the 26/11 attacks. Its mastermind, Hafiz Saeed, has however been roaming freely in Pakistan.

Pakistan has so far not completed trial in the 26/11 case.
Ties between India and Pakistan have remained tense since the 2008 Mumbai terror attack and nosedived after the Uri terror attack by Pakistan-based terrorists in September 2016, that claimed lives of 19 Indian soldiers.

As India remembers the victims of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks on its tenth anniversary today, various events will be organised across the nation, especially in Mumbai, to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the horrific attacks.
